CSEM Swiss Center for Electronics and Microtechnology
The high-tech activities of CSEM range from applied research to industrial products at an international level. The high degree of expertise of our staff is our strength.
CSEM Swiss Center for Electronics and Microtechnology is a privately owned, knowledge-based company carrying out applied research work, product development and prototype production. CSEM anticipates and fulfils the needs of industrial partners by offering its high-tech know-how and expertise in the fields of micro, nano and information technologies.
The Nanotechnology and Life Sciences department is currently offering :
1- Ph.D Student position in Micro and Nanotechnology
The mission:
The aim of the project is to develop functional and responsive silicon nanoporous membranes and to evaluate their applicability for the controlled delivery of (bio)molecules. First, free-standing silicon membranes will be produced using processes combining self-assembly and standard microfabrication techniques. Significant part of the work will be dedicated to the improvement of the fabrication yield and process versatility (e.g. tunability of pore diameter and porosity). Second, the porous structure of the silicon membranes will be post-functionalized with "smart" layers in order to introduce responsive surface properties. This work will be conducted together with our chemist Engineers. Finally, the controlled permeability to drugs will be studied by complementary analytical techniques after integration of the fabricated membrane in prototype fluidic devices. The student will be in charge of the experimental work, understanding of fundamental aspects of membrane fabrication, functionalization, prototyping and testing. The project includes close collaborations with CSEM R&D Engineers and external partners. The student may be affiliated to a doctoral school at EPFL. The project will be funded for a period of three years with an expected starting date in March-April 2010.
Your profile:
You should have a significant background in micro and nanofabrication techniques and processes (lithography, wet and dry etching), micro/nanosystems and a good knowledge of material science in general. A previous experience in a clean room is an asset, good knowledge in surface chemistry would be appreciated. You should demonstrate your interest for applied research projects and your ability to work in a team. Excellent speaking and writing skills in English are required. A basic knowledge of French would be an asset.
The offer:
CSEM offers a stimulating and multidisciplinary work environment with the opportunity to work with leading Swiss and international companies. You will have the opportunity to benefit from excellent social security conditions and to evolve within a multicultural company which clearly promotes an employee-driven culture.
